Dermal fillers are aesthetic gel-based treatments injected into the skin. They are designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, contour the face and create volume – most popularly used for lip enhancement. Some dermal fillers like Hydroboost can even hydrate and revitalise your skin. Keep reading as we explain how this treatment works and answer other frequently asked questions about this popular product!
How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal fillers work by imitating a naturally occurring substance within your body – a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms. Its normal function is to bind water so it acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body, such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients and in regulating water balance in the skin. By boosting your skin with this naturally occurring substance, dermal fillers revitalise and add facial volume to the area instantly. This diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinkles and gives a natural softer look. The gel we use is very tissue-friendly and closely resembles that which exists in the body.
What are the benefits of dermal filler?
Results from a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last for up to 6 – 18 months, depending on the thickness of the product and a number of biological factors of an individual client. We use dermal filler injections to give a natural-looking result that does not affect facial expression. Our face changes as we age, so dermal fillers allow you to control your looks subtly over time.
What areas can be treated?
Dermal fillers can help smooth away smile lines, add fullness to thin lips, shape facial contours, such as cheeks and chin, and hydrate and revitalise the skin. The most common areas treated are the nose-to-mouth lines (the nasolabial folds), the lips (adding volume and shape) and the cheeks. We do not treat the nose or temples with dermal filler.
Is dermal filler permanent?
One of the advantages of dermal filler treatment is that the effects are long-lasting but not permanent. Dermal filler products are biodegradable, which means they will naturally disappear from the body. The longevity of your filler can vary depending on the brand, thickness and area treated. Duration also depends on many factors, such as the individual’s skin type, skin condition, lifestyle and age. For optimal and long-lasting results – a top-up treatment is recommended 6-12 months after your initial treatment. Our experienced doctors and registered nurse injectors will guide you on the appropriate time for your follow-up appointment.
Do dermal filler treatments hurt?
Pain levels will really depend on the individual. The injections themselves feel like a slight pinch, and you may experience slight pressure or a ‘stinging’ sensation as the product is injected. Depending on the area, your cosmetic injector may apply numbing cream before treatment. All our fillers already contain local anaesthetic making the treatment more tolerable.
Can everybody use dermal fillers?
You must be over 18 to receive a dermal filler treatment. Dermal fillers should not be used in or near areas where there is or has been skin disease, inflammation or skin-related problems. Dermal fillers have not been tested in pregnant or breast-feeding women, individuals with medical conditions that lower the body’s immune response or individuals undergoing therapy that is immunosuppressive may be more prone to infection by a skin injection procedure. During your pre-treatment consultation, you should thoroughly discuss your medical history with your treating nurse or doctor.

Why doesn’t this website talk about specific fillers?
In Australia, it is against the law to advertise the names of prescription medicines such as dermal filler, so we are unable to mention the trade names on our website or otherwise. We do however have the leading brands of fillers and when you have your consultation we can freely talk about the options available.
