Before fat freezing (cryolypolysis or ‘cool sculpting’) hit the market, liposuction was the best method for spot fat reduction. In recent years, the liposuction evolution has developed into even safer procedures that are yet again, less invasive, safer and when exercised by professionals, able to greatly improve aesthetic body contours. One such non-surgical procedure is cryolipolysis, which has already proven its effectiveness on fat-reduction with its cool sculpting technology.

A little history on lipo

Liposuction was first popularised back in the 1970s, when French surgeon Dr Yves-Gerard Illouz burst onto the scene with his suction-assisten lypolysis technique. Dubbed the “Illouz Method”, the technique was critiqued with doubtful opinions, as at the time, it could only be considered too good to be true. Although others dabbled prior to Illouz, he was the first to open the door to effective and safer methods of liposuction.

The technique is most renowned for the induction the blunt cannula. This is because it allowed the procedure to remove fat while still maintaining the integrity of other bodily structures that reside between the dermis and muscle fascia. The immediate result was a decrease in complications for patients. Initially, the most that Illouz could remove to recontour a body was two liters. Nowadays, up to five liters is legally possible.

Cool sculpting or CryoDefine?

At Australian Skin Clinics, we use a non-invasive, fat-reduction technology called CryoDefine Fat Freezing. This device uses similar technology to the Cool Sculpting brand of fat reduction but with the added benefit of a dual-paddle system – meaning clients can treat two areas in the one session! CryoDefine selectively cools fat cells, causing them to be destroyed. The body then naturally removes the fat cells through its normal elimination process. This treatment provides a unique non-surgical, non-anaesthetic from of cryolipolysis, which provides a safer alternative to liposuction surgery.

How does it work?

The cooling energy is delivered to the subcutaneous fat layer without causing damage to surrounding tissue or structures. Clients initially experience a burst of intense, localised coldness. This subsides within five to 15 minutes as the area becomes numb.Suction pressure caused by the vacuum applicators may result in pulling and/or pinching sensations and some bruisng can occur, however unlike liposuction, the procedure is non-surgical.

Typically, clients can return to normal activities immediately. Any redness, minor bruising, tingling or numbness in the treatment area is temporary and will be resolved completely.
