Caring for your lips after dermal filler is an important step in seeing the best possible results. As always, your doctor or registered nurse injector will discuss all of the post-care guidelines (below) during your consultation, to ensure you have a safe and effective treatment.
Remember, individual post-filler experiences will differ from person to person, and the tips in this article should not replace real medical advice. Please call your treating clinic and speak with your injector if you have any further follow up questions about caring for your lips after dermal filler.
Apply ice immediately post treatment
After dermal filler, it is normal to experience some swelling. Your nurse will provide you with some ice to help reduce the amount of swelling that occurs. Apply every 5-10 minutes as required, for up to six hours. It is also important to keep in mind that this initial fullness will decrease as the swelling goes down to reveal your natural new pout. It may take several treatments to reach the lip size and shape you desire.
Massage your lips as instructed
Your cosmetic injector will advise you on how and when to massage to assist with creating a natural final result. Sometimes you may be asked not to massage them at all. It is extremely important to follow your injectors recommendations! If you are unsure when you get home, phone your treating clinic to get clarification.
Injectors top tip: Purchase some Bepanthen from your local chemist to assist with massaging your lips. The anti-bacterial properties in this product (typically used on soft babies’ skin) is perfect to aid healing and reduce any peeling that may occur.
Minimise any bruising
There are some people who don’t experience any bruising after dermal fillers but don’t worry if you’re not one of the lucky few. Bruising can be a normal occurrence after any injectables treatment and can be treated with Arnica pilules or Hirudoid cream (available from local pharmacy). Sleep with your head slightly elevated and avoid pressure on the area and minimise the risk of further bruising. If you want to cover up any bruising, you can apply mineral makeup where necessary, always using a clean brush.
Injectors top tip: LED Light Therapy is a fantastic treatment to assist in reducing swelling and bruising and speeding up your recovery process post treatment.
Avoid exercise for the next 24 hours
As with so many of our advanced med-aesthetic treatments, we recommend avoiding exercise for the 24 hours following your injectables treatment. We want to avoid any extra heat or sweat to the area, so avoid hot showers or any sauna or steam rooms, too. For the best results after dermal filler we want to cool and calm the area! A gentle walk is fine but avoid anything that speeds up your blood flow.
Injectors top tip: Drink lots of water and eat a healthy diet as this will help your filler last longer. Filler is made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, so maintaining a healthy internal environment can assist in prolonging the life of your filler!
Don’t fly internationally within seven days
As a precaution, we recommend avoiding any international flights with seven days of your treatment. It’s all to do with avoiding that cabin pressure for a prolonged period of time. Remember, we have already created a lot of pressure on the skin and blood vessels in the area with the treatment alone.
Injectors top tip: If you have a big event coming up or your are planning on travelling overseas, book your injectables appointment at least two or three weeks prior. This will ensure you have enough time to return for your two-week review and for any bruising and pressure to subside from the area.
Know the warning signs
Dermal fillers are a safe and effective treatment, but there are always risks involved with any injectables procedure. Your doctor or nurse cosmetic injector will discuss this with you thoroughly before your treatment, but it is important to know the warning signs after you have left the treatment room. Should you experience any bruising that begins to spread, unusual or continued pain, excessive heat to the area or feel generally unwell, call your cosmetic injector immediately for advice and assistance.
Book a review appointment
Your two-week review is an important part of the injectable process. After two weeks, your lips have settled into their new shape, and your injector can review them to make sure you are happy with the results! It’s the perfect opportunity for you to ask any further questions you may have about your results and complete your before and after photographs – which are always fun to look back on!
