It’s no surprise that dermal lip fillers are one of our most popular treatments, as they can plump your lips and add definition and shape. To get the best results from your dermal filler treatment, it’s important to follow your aftercare plan.

During consultation, our doctor or registered nurse will discuss your lip filler aftercare requirements to ensure that your experience is comfortable and effective. Remember that post-filler experiences vary from person to person, and the tips in this article should not replace medical advice. Please call your treating clinic and speak with your injector if you have any questions about caring for your lips after enhancing with dermal filler.

Apply ice immediately post treatment

It’s totally normal to experience some swelling after lip filler. Your nurse may give you some ice to help reduce the amount of swelling. Apply every 5-10 minutes as required, for up to six hours. Although your lips will initially appear quite full, keep in mind that this fullness will decrease as the swelling goes down to reveal your natural new pout. It may take several treatments to reach the lip size and shape you’re after.

Massage your lips as instructed

To achieve the most natural result, your cosmetic injector will advise you how and when to massage your lips. Sometimes you may be asked not to massage them at all. It is extremely important to follow your injectors recommendations! You can always phone your clinic if you’re unsure about your aftercare plan.

Injectors top tip: Purchase some Bepanthen from your local chemist to assist with massaging your lips. The anti-bacterial properties in this product (typically used on soft babies’ skin) are perfect to aid healing and keep your lips well hydrated.

Minimise any bruising

There are some people who don’t experience any bruising after dermal fillers but don’t worry if you’re not one of the lucky few. Bruising is a normal occurrence after any injectables treatment and can be treated with Arnica tablets or Hirudoid cream (available from the chemist). Sleep with your head slightly elevated to avoid pressure on the area and minimise the risk of further bruising. Mineral makeup can be used after a few hours if you’d like to cover up any bruising, as long as you use a clean brush.

Injectors top tip: LED Light Therapy is a fantastic treatment to assist in reducing swelling and bruising and speeding up your recovery process post treatment. Ask in clinic about this!

Avoid exercise for the next 24 hours

For best results, it’s important to keep the area cool and calm. As with so many of our advanced med-aesthetic treatments, we recommend avoiding exercise for the 24 hours following your injectables treatment to avoid any extra heat or sweat to the area. It’s a good idea to avoid hot showers, saunas or steam rooms, too. A gentle walk is fine but avoid anything that speeds up your blood flow.

Injectors top tip: Drink lots of water and eat a healthy diet as this will help your filler last longer. Filler is made up of a naturally occurring bodily substance, otherwise known as a sugar molecule. Maintaining a healthy internal environment can assist in prolonging the life of your filler!

Avoid lipstick and lip locking

It’s best to wait at least six hours before applying lipstick after your lip filler treatment, as it can potentially affect your results or risk infection. We also recommend that you avoid kissing for 2-3 days since it can place pressure on your new lips while they are still settling.

Don’t fly internationally within seven days

Since the treatment has caused pressure on the skin and blood vessels in the area, it’s generally best to avoid anything that adds pressure such as long-haul flights. Additionally, it’s important that you have access to required support and care within the first seven days in the unlikely event that you experience any issues. Travelling overseas limits our ability to take care of you.

Injectors top tip: If you have a big event coming up or you are planning on travelling overseas, book your injectables appointment at least two or three weeks prior. This will ensure you have enough time to return for your two-week review and for any bruising and pressure to subside from the area.

Know the warning signs

Dermal fillers are an effective treatment, but there are always risks involved with any injectables procedure. Your doctor or nurse cosmetic injector will discuss this with you thoroughly before your treatment, but it is important to know the warning signs after you have left the treatment room. If you experience any bruising that begins to spread, unusual or continued pain, excessive heat to the area or feel generally unwell, call the clinic immediately for advice and assistance.

Book a review appointment

Your two-week review is an important part of the injectable process. After two weeks, your lips have settled into their new shape, and your injector can review them to make sure you are happy with the results! It’s the perfect opportunity for you to ask any further questions you may have and complete your before and after photographs – which are always fun to look back on!
