Whether it’s a ten-step High Performance Microdermabrasion, laser hair removal or a little lip filler, deciding to take the plunge into the medi-aesthetic world for the first time can seem daunting.

While skin treatments and injectables are an effective way to boost your natural beauty without dramatic surgery, for some, not knowing what to expect before, during and after treatment might leave you with a tonne of questions.

To help prepare you, Australian Skin Clinics’ National Training Manager Darlene O’Gara shares her advice  on how to get ready for your first appointment, what to expect from a medi-aesthetic clinic and the question you should ask as a first-timer.

How to pick the right medi-aesthetic clinic

You’ve made the decision to up your skincare and beauty game. Maybe you have chosen a treatment that you think is right for you, or you have a skincare concern you’d like to treat, or maybe you want to achieve a certain #skincaregoal for a special occasion?

Regardless what your reasons are for wanting to visit a medi-aesthetic clinic, finding the right clinic is perhaps the most important part of the process.

Researching the right clinic for you is the most important part of your first visit. You want to make sure that the clinic offers complimentary consultations to assess your skin, understand the results you’re trying to achieve and make sure your skin is adequately prepped prior to receiving a treatment.

Be sure to look for a clinic that has fully qualified staff and hold appropriate laser licencing if in Queensland or Western Australia. The clinic should also use medical-grade equipment that is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved and of course, an environment that makes you feel comfortable.

The clinic that ticks all these boxes is the one for you.

What should you expect?

It is great to do your research and even speak to friends who have tried the treatments before! However, having a consultation with an expert laser and dermal technician or registered nurse prior to treatment will give you the best understanding of what to expect.

It doesn’t hurt to take notes at your consultation to make sure you know exactly what will happen before, during and after your treatment, making the process run smoothly and most importantly, make you confident in your decision.

Make sure to be upfront about what you want, your technician will let you know whether your goals are attainable, offer alternative treatment options where required and discuss how many appointments and associated costs will be required to achieve the desired effect.

What questions should I ask?

Before considering any beautifying procedure, it is essential to ask key questions about your desired aesthetics, downtime, potential upkeep costs and treatment timeframe to gauge which treatment options are right for your needs and budget.

Asking questions gives your technician or nurse a strong sense of what you are aiming to achieve. By looking at your facial features and anatomy, they can offer advice or slight tweaks to your original treatment plan to give you the best outcome for your features or skin type.

When should you start?

While most treatments can start after the initial consultation, it is ultimately up to you and when to begin.

It’s important to keep in mind you may not achieve your 100 per cent result on your first treatment, however with consecutive treatments you can build on your first appointment to achieve your desired result.

Many people walk in with visions of their perfect face or body, and that’s okay, but it’s something that needs to be worked towards and may not be achieved in just one treatment.
