If you have ever been embarrassed by excessive sweating, experienced dreaded sweat patches on your favourite shirt or continually dabbed away the perspiring moustache forming on your upper lip, then you’ve most likely investigated treatments to provide relief of your body’s overactive sweat glands.

Luckily, there are options available for serial sweaters that don’t include invasive surgery, numerous paper towels and ‘extra strength’ deodorants. Sweat reduction injectables are a painless and common solution for many who have moderate to excessive perspiration; even celebrities have been known to get an underarm jab or two during awards season. Let’s take a closer look!

What is excessive sweating?

Our bodies contain anywhere from two to four million sweat glands, with higher density in the underarms, palms, soles and face. When we overheat, our nervous system responds by altering our breathing and blood flow patterns. In turn, this activates our sweat glands and they begin to secrete water and chemical compounds to cool us down.

While this is how most of us sweat, every three in 100 Australians live with hyperhidrosis, a condition that affects the comfort and confidence of men and women due to an overactive ‘cooling system.’ The most common areas affected by hyperhidrosis are the hands, feet, underarms, face, and head.

Although a tough session in the gym or an extra hot day can make anyone work up a sweat, those who have hyperhidrosis sweat continually, even when it’s cold outside or they haven’t physically exerted themselves.

What can be done about it?

Is the prospect of wearing a grey t-shirt in summer too good to pass up? While clinical and topical products might be effective some, sweat reduction injectables are routinely recommended by professionals as the next step in treatment.

Sweat reduction injectables are multi-functional, often used to relax facial muscles for rejuvenation purposes. By injecting small doses below the surface of the skin, the product can inhibit nerve transmission to the sweat glands, slowing down the production of sweat and reducing output by as much as 90 per cent. While everyone has different metabolic rates, results generally last up to nine months. As this is not a permanent solution; we recommend re-treatment between six and 16 months depending on your requirements.

What can you expect in an appointment?

While procedures involving needles can be daunting for some, sweat reduction treatment is an excellent solution to excessive perspiration. Patients can ask to have a numbing cream applied to the skin at least 20 minutes before the treatment begins to limit any uncomfortable sensations. Once in effect, a registered nurse injector will mark the targeted area with a pen and begin treatment. To get truly effective results, we do recommend chatting with a registered cosmetic nurse to determine if you require a set of treatments to ensure the results are most effective.
