Once reserved only for the rich and famous, laser hair removal is now a common and affordable method of removing unwanted hair. But despite its rise in popularity, there are still some common misconceptions about the treatment that live on. Read on as we ‘zap’ these laser hair myths once and for all!

Myth #1

We can only treat clients with fair skin and dark hair

While this may have been the case years ago, technology advances mean that our lasers can now treat all skin types including dark brown. In fact, we have separate machines for lighter and darker skin tones. On the day, your therapist will adjust the laser settings according to your complexion, hair type and other relevant information.

Myth #2

You can’t get treatments during spring or summer

Totally untrue. While winter is the ideal time to start your series of laser hair removal as its easier to avoid the sun, you can still have laser hair removal treatments during the warmer months. Simply ensure that you are keeping the treatment area protected from sun exposure between your sessions, and remember that we cannot treat clients who have a tan (real or fake!).

Myth #3

You must grow your hair out in between treatments

Nope! Unlike waxing, you don’t need to grow your hair out in between sessions (can we get a halleluiah!?). For effective treatment with the laser, we require the hair to be shaved – meaning you can continue remove any unwanted regrowth between sessions.

As you progress through your treatment series, the amount of hair regrowth will significantly decrease, which will mean that even though you can shave, you won’t need to!

Myth #4

It only takes one treatment for permanent results

Don’t expect immediate results after one session. Within a month of your first treatment your laser hair removal treatment will begin to work. After each treatment the hair becomes lighter or thinner and once you complete your treatment plan of 6-12 sessions, you should expect long-term hair reduction.

Myth #5

The laser beam can be harmful to internal organs

Not only is this myth untrue, it’s also entirely impossible! The laser does not penetrate deep enough to reach your internal organs and is perfectly safe when operated by one of our highly-trained laser technicians.

Myth #6

All laser machines are created equal

This is false. Laser machines can differ greatly in quality, power, wavelength, pulse duration and other factors, which is why it is always a good idea to check the brand your clinic is using. At Australian Skin Clinics we use fast Candela Gentlelase and Candela Gentleyag equipment with the most accurate laser spot size. Most importantly, our staff are highly trained in optimal use of this medical-grade equipment by the Advanced Skills Academy, to ensure your safety and results.

laser hair removal vs waxing

Myth #7

It’s more expensive than waxing

Not only will laser hair removal save you more money over time, it’s also longer lasting, gentler on the skin and treatments are faster. Don’t believe us? Try our online cost calculator for yourself and discover the true cost of waxing… Myth busted!
