Microdermabrasion vs Micro-needling

Although they may target some of the same skin concerns, micro-needling vs microdermabrasion are two very different treatments that use different methods to achieve their results. Essentially, microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin, while micro-needling stimulates the skin. While microdermabrasion treats the skin’s surface, the micro-needling process reaches the deeper layers of the epidermis.

Both treatments are predominately performed on the face, however, can be used to treat other areas of the body including the neck and décolletage. Appointment times for both treatments usually range from between 30-60 minutes, depending on the area.

Micro-needling

Micro-needling is the newer of the two treatments and is designed to trigger the skin’s own healing response. This is achieved using a handheld device that penetrates the skin with tiny needles, causing micro-wounds that stimulate collagen and elastin. This collagen helps to achieve a smoother, firmer and more refined complexion. Micro-needling is considered minimally invasive, and numbing cream is used to minimise any discomfort to the client during the treatment process.

Micro-needling targets:

– Acne scarring
Stretch marks
Open pores
– Fine lines
– Hyperpigmentation

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, is a non-invasive procedure that gently exfoliates the skin’s surface, using vacuum suction to remove dead skin, dirt and debris. Using a powerful diamond-tipped applicator, the skin is gently “buffed and polished”, as the top layer of skin cells are removed. This clears congestion and promotes the growth of healthy new skin cells, often leaving clients feeling smoother, fresher and brighter immediately after treatment.

Microdermabrasion targets:

– Acne and congestion
– Breakouts and blackheads
– Dry skin
– Dullness
– Uneven skin tone

Which treatment is right for you?

Whether your dermal technician recommends micro-needling, microdermabrasion or a combination of the two will be dependent on your skin’s needs and what you would like to achieve.

Microdermabrasion and micro-needling aren’t a quick-fix solution to all your skincare problems, both treatments aim to improve skin texture and tone over time. It is usually recommended that clients receive a minimum of three treatments are monthly intervals to achieve best results. Select microdermabrasion treatments can be performed fortnightly.
