When it comes to beauty, the market is saturated with products and services that scream ‘latest and greatest’ in skincare technology; and with a society obsessed with their looks, many men and women are willing to try anything to look, feel and stay young.

So, when we heard about the new micro-current facial that’s quickly becoming the new favourite among the celebrity-set including Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian, we had to take a deeper dive and find out, is it glam or just another scam?

How do micro-current facials work?

Dubbed the Pilates class for your face, this procedure claims to mimic our own bodies’ natural energy currents. The expensive cosmetic procedure (also available as an at-home device) is done by using a thick gel, which is also used for ultrasound scans and allows the electric pulses to be evenly distributed. Then two metal prongs containing electricity are applied to the skin’s surface, reportedly stimulating the muscles underneath with the aim to tone and tighten the face.

As the device is moved around the face or body, the low voltage of the electric pulses creates a slight tingling, but the current’s intensity is so light that it would take one million microcurrents to light a 40-watt light bulb!

What does the procedure promise?

Micro-current facials promise to tone your skin, decrease wrinkles and increase your overall skin health by bumping up those collagen levels. Sounds too good to be true, right?

While the micro-current facial has shown to produce some positive results in pain management and post-operative therapy, the jury is still out on whether it really produces the skin tightening, toning and rejuvenation results we are all looking for in our skincare regime.

So, what can be done to tone, firm and tighten the skin?

Luckily, there are treatments out there that are proven to be more effective and less electric than the micro-current facial. Our go-to treatment for skin tightening is Fractional RF, which uses a combination of micro-needling and radio frequency to stimulate the skin’s natural healing response to generate new cells, producing collagen and tightening the skin.

Micro-needling is another fantastic treatment that has been proven to reduce imperfections in the skin and help promote collage and elastin, by using tiny needles to create small perforations, or ‘micro-channels’ in the skin.

When it comes to do-it-yourself devices like the micro-current facial, we always recommend doing your research before investing. Chances are if the experts aren’t using it, you’re not going to get much bang for your buck.
