While sunscreen is necessary all year round, it’s particularly important in summer when the sun is beating down and you’re spending more time outside hitting the pool and beach! In the sun, our skin is at risk of sunburn and skin cancer, but also accumulative sun damage that results in premature ageing and wrinkles, pigmentation, blood vessels, brown spots and open pores. When it comes to protecting your skin, the age-old saying is true – slip, slop, slap. Here’s some of our favourite tips and tricks to protecting your skin this summer.
Reapply your sunscreen regularly
Almost everyone is on the sunscreen bandwagon by now, but it’s just as important to reapply your sun protection regularly, especially if you’re spending all day outdoors and are going for a dip! Our favourite sunscreen is the Balense UV Defiance SPF 50+, which is four-hour water resistant and protects against both UVA and UVB rays. For everyday protection, Ultraceuticals has a great range of sunscreens for all skin types. They offer high, broad spectrum protection in a lightweight, fast absorbing, shine-free finish that is perfect underneath makeup.
Attend to sunburn quickly
Had a little too much sun time and now you’re feeling the burn? It happens to the best of us and it’s super important to look after your skin when it’s in this condition to best treat the burn and make sure your skin can heal as quickly as possible. For the first 24-hours after a sunburn, apply aloe vera or a similar anti-inflammatory product to cool and soothe the skin. After 24-hours be sure to intensely hydrate the skin by creating a barrier that helps skin heal, keeps moisture in and prevents further dehydration. We recommend the Balense Recovery Cream to soothe, calm and hydrate the skin, as well as reduce the appearance of redness.
Pop up a beach umbrella
While sunscreen is the first line of defense against sun damage, beach umbrellas, cover-ups and other accessories not only further protect you, but are also a great way to express your summer style. Sarongs and kaftans add extra flair to your look and don’t forget your hat and sunglasses for the complete beach look!
Think long term with a Vitamin B
Vitamin B is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant (taken orally and/or applied topically) that helps reduce skin cancers and sunspots when taken regularly. Vitamin B3 or niacinamide is an ingredient commonly used in skincare products to help diminish pigmentation. The Ultraceuticals Ultra Retexturising Body Complex is a dual-action body lotion formulated with niacinamide to both hydrate the skin and exfoliate to reduce dark spots. Exfoliating facial treatments like microdermabrasion and medi-aesthetic peels can help to significantly reduce the appearance of sun damage and pigmentation well after it has occurred.
