Microdermabrasion – it’s more than a facial and yet still a non-invasive lunchtime procedure!

It sloughs off the dead and dull surface layers of the skin, stimulates an increase in collagen production and cell rejuvenation. Many clients see dramatic improvements in the tone, texture and colour of the treated area after just one treatment. Microdermabrasion can also improve dull skin, enlarged or clogged pores, fine lines, acne and acne scars and mild complexion concerns.

While most people quickly understand why microderms are so good for your skin, many are confused about which type they should have – crystal, hydro or diamond microdermabrasion?

The dermabrasion differences

Crystal microdermabrasion technology uses a hand-held wand that propels a flow of crystals (usually aluminium oxide sodium bicarbonate) onto the skin. At the same time, the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, dead cells and used crystals.

The hydro-jet technology is where the flow of crystals has been replaced with a pressurised flow of water. This could be distilled water, saline or water with an infusion of vitamins and minerals. The hydro-jet treatment is mostly used for those taking certain acne medications where traditional microdermabrasion is not suitable.

On diamond-tipped machines, the crystal or water flow is replaced with a circular diamond head. This is moved back and forth across the skin to remove dead skin cells. Vacuum suction will remove the dead skin cells. Using medical-grade equipment, the results from these treatments will be similar but from a results perspective diamond-tipped microdermabrasion is superior.

Why diamond microdermabrasion reigns supreme

At Australian Skin Clinics we offer the diamond-tipped microdermabrasion for several reasons. Firstly, when treating severe acne, we do not want crystals to embed in open sores (ouch!). Secondly, diamond tips can be steralised at high temperatures so we can avoid cross-contamination. This is extremely important in providing a safe and effective treatment. Finally, diamond microdermabrasion technology can also get closer to the eye area than other methods.

Our treatment protocol provides a thorough 50-minute appointment and we specialise in the treatment of problem skin. We offer three different levels of our microdermabrasion, all of which help to release dead skin cells, and allow for the nourishment and moisturising of the skin. In our signature 10-step High Performance microdermabrasion, we also include extractions if necessary to remove stubborn blackheads. This microdermabrasion is the equivalent to a “deluxe” treatment elsewhere.
