Yes, you read that correctly, ‘maskne’ is now a thing. With the increased need for Australians and people around the world to begin wearing masks to keep ourselves and our communities safe, many of us are starting to experience the side-effects that this ‘new normal’ is creating for our skin.

Now of course, maskne should not be used as a reason to avoid wearing your mask when required, which is why we have pulled together some quick and simple solutions to save your skin while also staying covid-19 safe!

What causes Maskne?

Wearing a mask for long periods of time can cause oils to become trapped in the skin, clogging our pores resulting in increased congestion. It might also cause skin irritation from continuous rubbing and friction. To help prevent this, there are several steps you can take, starting with proper mask care and hygiene!

When using a reusable mask, it is recommended that you wash it after each use. Not only is this good hygiene (after all, they are design to catch germs!) but is also prevents the build-up of oils and dirt from spreading onto your skin. Ensure your re-usable mask is made of a breathable cloth, is correctly fitted and used according to the guidelines provided by your local health authorities.

Go makeup free

Who needs a full face of makeup when you can only see from the cheeks up, are we right!? Wearing a heavy face of makeup underneath your mask can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts, so it is recommended to go makeup free under your mask.

If you absolutely must apply something, try using a light mineral powder or BB cream instead and ensure you use quality skincare products as a base. Don’t forget to apply a hydrating lip balm prior to wearing your mask to prevent your luscious lips from drying out under there!

Use the right products

Help support healthy skin by applying good skincare underneath your mask. The first step is choosing an appropriate moisturiser for your skin type. This should be applied first, prior to putting on any makeup or masks! Remember, mask irritation commonly occurs on the neck so don’t forget this area as a part of your product application routine.

After you have moisturised, products that protect the skin are essential. If you’re experiencing irritation, we recommend trying the Balense Recovery Cream. The product contains a nourishing hydro-film that reduces redness, irritation, inflammation while boosting moisture levels. It is ideal for people who are already prone to eczema or dermatitis.

Finally, an SPF 50+ should be applied for additional barrier and sun protection. Yes, we know that half your face is covered by your mask but it’s no excuse to skip this step. Sunscreen is always important, especially if you don’t want to end up with a mask tan!

Cleanse & soothe

Once you’re in the safety of your own home and have removed your mask, immediately cleanse your skin with a gentle and calming cleanser to ensure you keep it clear and calm. Try the Balense Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, which contains hydrating and anti-redness properties to efficiently cleanse dirt, debris and environmental pollutants off the skin. In the evening, apply the Balense Enzymatic Sleep Masque to gently exfoliate, boost hydration and reduce skin redness.
