Commonly misunderstood, and therefore mistreated, blackheads are in fact a form of acne. Blackheads are caused by a build-up of sebum, dead skin cells and other impurities which clog the pore, turning its characteristic shade of black/brown due to oxidisation (air exposure).
Blackheads are not ‘dirt’ trapped under the skin and sufferers should avoid squeezing or picking at the affected areas, as this can push the blemish further into the skin and leave a lasting scar.
